There’s a wonderful short prayer in the Hebrew liturgy which is recited after eating. Strangely the prayer begins with a unique formula which appears nowhere else in the liturgy, “You created many beings, each with their own unique emptiness.” Ostensibly, at this point we are feeling well-fed, full, happy and thankful. So why are we talking about all these creatures and their emptinesses!? Quite simply, because food and emptiness are the closest of intimates. Food can be used to fill the empty stomach, or it can be used to fill the empty soul. It can be used and it can be abused. Addictive eating is born from the emptiness. Emptiness is like a shrewd gangster who hires food out to seduce you. You give in to her chocolate covered charm, devour her, as the emptiness devours you.
