Why do I care so much about Eros?
Because anything less than Eros may well destroy our planet. We abuse each other personally. Men who are not evolved, lost in the emptiness of the moment, rape women. Women who are not evolved, lost in the emptiness of the moment, name rape men. Nations mass murder other nations. We ravage the environment and allow twenty million people a year to die of hunger or related diseases a year. The simple and essential cause is a lack of Eros. We desperately need to feel like we are on the inside but we don’t. So we settle for pseudo Eros. We pretend like we are in the inside by placing others on the outside. We do not feel embraced in real Eros of love so we grasp for the pseudo Eros of fear war and obsessive consumption.
Only one who truly lives in Eros lives in love. Only one who truly lives in Eros can truly live in ethos. Here is the huge sentence. All failures of ethics stem from the collapse of eros.
That is perhaps the single most important idea of Isaac Luria’s and it is the basis of all of his ethics, of his understanding of love and just about everything else.
Eros is not sex. Sex is but one model for the erotic.
Eros is the fullness of presence, wholeness, interiority, and yearning. Eros is the genuine realization of the true nature of reality. Eros is the passionate ethical commitment to a life of integrity, compassion and forgiveness. Eros is the most gorgeous expression of truth. Eros is you and Eros is me.
We can do better. We must do better.
