Shut Eyes
We get tired for all sorts of good reasons. There is much we should not have to see in this world. To protect ourselves from the pain we sort of let our eyes drift shut.
We become only semi-conscious and this is how we flow languidly through life. The problem is that although we think we are avoiding some of world’s hurt, we are blinded to all the magnificent color, ripening beauty and rapture as well.
There is a biblical myth saying, “The work is hard, the day is short and the workers are lazy.” We have so little time on this exquisite planet, so much wondrous work to do. Seeing — true, deep, sensuous seeing — is hard work. We need to open and enliven our eyes, lest we laze our way through the vast opportunity of our days.
The wisdom masters teach, “Why is the color of the sunset so red?’ The answer, The sun is red with shame that another day passed without Redemption coming. Just so with us, we also, at the set of every day, are embarrassed by all the miracles placed before us that day that we did not see and appreciate.
For the perceiving of life’s daily miracles — the beauty of a bird song, the gorgeousness of the people around us — that is Redemption indeed.
