Holy of Holies with Marc Gafni, December, 2013
Marc Gafni private study session, transcribed by Adael Elizabeth Helen Bullock:
A true story for you today . . . beloved, EH.
I once had lunch with a beautiful man who was a famous Buddhist teacher. He said to me, “Marc, I hear you are a great teacher with a beautiful transmission but I cannot take you seriously.”
“Why I asked?” taking mock offense.
He said, “Because I understand that you believe in prayer.”
I said to him, “I don’t believe in prayer, I know prayer.”
I said to him, “What do you know?”
“I know awareness,” he said.
“You mean you believe in awareness?” I asked.
He said, “No, I know awareness. Awareness isn’t a dogma, awareness is a realization.”
“Aha, my friend,” I responded to him, “know that prayer is a realization.”
His heart opened. We were silent for several long moments. I said to him, “You know now my friend, perhaps for the first time in your life, that every place you fall, you fall into God’s hands. . .
That the God you don’t believe in doesn’t exist. . .
That God is not merely the infinity of power, but the infinity of intimacy. . .
And that you are God’s unique intimacy, radically recognized, wildly loved, and fully held.”
Our eyes locked, God seeing God, even as we were both held … by God.
