An old love letter to an old friend

Marc Gafni » Blog - Spiritually Incorrect » An old love letter to an old friend

Love had gotten to be way too limited. We love only our romantic partners.

Sort of..

Only to them do we write them love letters and poetry.

Sort of…Sometimes,,,

That is a big mistake.

Yes Yes Yes… we should write love letters and poetry to our romantic partners. That is i soo good. That’s suuuuch a good thing.

But we should also write love letters and poetry to love letters and poetry to our friends.

Love needs to be expanded to include soooo many more people then the narrowed circles of loving that make up our lives.

If we are truly alive then our romantic partner, be it husband, wife – or whatever the configuration is- simply cannot contain all of our love.

Our love is in exile if we love only one person with great, open, and vast heart.

So here is such a love letter I wrote a while back to a friend. Not a romantic partner.

An old friend.

Just ran across it on my computer.

I wrote it quickly, right before going to the airport to catch a plane someplace, after receiving a short note from the describing in the most unassuming and modest way, a typical day in his/her life.

Wanted to share it with you!

Am going to see if I might find one or to more later tonight to share with you…

If you have beautiful love letters please send to me and with your permission I will share some of them as well.

love to you
with all my heart!

Dear …

Am up for a while getting ready to fly this morning.

Somehow the letter from you this morning moved me more than any other conversation we have had.

I am not sure why.

you live a life of service, goodness and joy.

sometimes though i feel like I want to drop down inside with you.

to touch the wound the lies underneath and to kiss it with my tears and laughter and make it

whole.

and to have you do the same for me.

and i cannot quite find you there and we do not quite .. have the appropriate container

and perhaps it is not appropriate …or maybe it is…

who knows..

it is all good and fine and lovely

and then you send an email like this, which just describes in so unconscious a way your life –

a letter which is so simple, so direct, so present, so unvarnished

like the song of the robin in the morning or the sound of the rain falling on the temple roof..

your unfurnished eyes are beautiful.

your existence in the world makes my heart sing.

It is such an honor to be your friend,

marc
