The same thing happens with food everyday without our realizing it. Our bodies can be our most blatant teachers. Our bodies are talking, but are we listening? On a religious fast day a few years ago, I finally listened, and realized what fast days were all about. I was sitting at my desk, reading an article. Suddenly chocolate-covered raisins popped into my mind and my appetite. I got up to find a handful. Remembering that it was a fast day, I sat back down. The craving persisted. I thought to myself, ‘It’s only late morning. I’ve only been fasting a few hours, I shouldn’t be this hungry yet.’ Why did I so desperately desire chocolate covered raisins?
I pondered the mystery, finally figuring out why. It was the article I was reading. It was written by a colleague of mine on a subject I myself had worked on extensively, but had not yet published a piece. Instead of my mind reading the article and screaming, “Jealousy! Emptiness!” it had read the article and blared out, “Chocolate-covered raisins!” Had I not been fasting I would have proceeded to pop a couple hundred calories worth of those chocolate pills into my mouth and gone on to the next thing, never really realizing the cause.
