It is the human being becoming a channel for love that one is invited to see and to imitate when one watches the priest give a blessing.

It is in this sense that the ancient texts write — “When the priest gives a blessing the Shehina dwells between his fingertips.” A close observation of the process would yield that he begins the ceremony of blessing with his back to the crowd and his fist shut. He then slowly turns to be face to face with the throngs and gently opens his hand. The opening of his hand — which is an integral part of the ceremony – symbolized the biblical verse, “You shall not clench your hand before your brother the poor.”

It is a symbol of love, giving and ethics. He then raises his hand and in a first officer Spock Vulcan like gesture, splits the two sets of fingers on his hand – two to each side. He raises his hands and blesses the people. The ‘space between his fingers’ — a symbol of non attachment, non grasping on the one hand and love and giving on the other — like the space between the cherubs — becomes the place where the Shehina dwells. It is a time of powerful love and Eros.
