There is astory of perception which comes from the war scarred world of Europe in the 1940’s . A couple in cracow is engaged to be married. Both of them beautiful. But then Hitler came and they were torn apart and each taken to the horrors of Auschwitz.
She to the women’s camp and he to the men’s. Miraculously they survived its tortures. So that when the Russians finally came and freed them, somehow this couple found each other. They came in to Auschwitz together. Weathered the horrors alone and now were leaving Auschwitz together.
They went into the post-war streets. Everything was bombed. Broken. Finally, they found one empty house they could enter and finally, for the first time, be alone. They were so happy to finally be together.
He had not seen hiself in a mirror for years. Didn’t know what he looked like. No hair, hardly alive. Full of scars. But even more heartbreaking, she was clean shaven, no hair, she very few teeth left. She to was full of scars. They had not seen themselves for so long. They came into this house and for the first time in years looked into a mirror.
They were shocked, especially this girl who had once been so beautiful. She cried, “This is the way I look! Not even the angel of death looks so bad.” Tell me two things. How did you recognize me? and how can you love somebody who looks like I look?”you know what he said to her?
“ How could I not recongnize you! You never looked more beautiful to me than right at this moment.”
